Gulce Yelken
BIOGRAPHY / IZMIR, 1981
Gülce Yelken was born in İzmir in 1981. In 2010, she graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, School of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture. She started her graduate studies the same year at Dokuz Eylül Institute of Fine Arts in the Department of Sculpture and completed in year 2015. She took part in several national as well as international art shows and symposiums.
Gülce Yelken makes both contemporary as well as traditional choices while selecting the materials to be used. She uses man-made materials like mirror and concrete together with natural materials like wood and marble. According to the artist, finished form of sculpture is hiding more than what is revealed in the process of transformation of the material. Yelken, departing from the idea that in the process of structuring the material incorporates a type of living, Yelken attempts trials by introducing segments from the various stages of the material at the “finished” forms of her sculptures. Thereby, she emphasizes both the time worn by the material as well as elapsed while the artist works with the material. Sound is one of the primary elements of her works. Sound coming from the material appears both as a part of the contact established with the sculpture and also a new form of art. Sound is both a source of inspiration of the series of sculptures named “Sound Form” and is at the same time transformed into an installation on its own enhancing dialogue of these sculptures with the audience.
