BIOGRAPHY / ISTANBUL, 1981

Fulya Asyalı was graduated from Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture in 2004. She completed her graduate studies in 2008, and her doctorate degree in 2016. At present, she is working as a research associate at the same institution. Besides opening personal exhibitions, Fulya Asyalı also took part in both national as well as international art shows.

Asyalı’s art is recognized by her surrealist approach to figurative sculptures. In her works, she creates metamorphic objects expressing melancholic feelings upon combining miniscule remnants of the town with parts of the human body. In her sculptures where contrasting concepts like living/non-living, new/old, past/future and interior/exterior are used, she enables us to question the bipolar make-up of existence. By means of bringing together contrary elements, she reinforces the inquiries made over dualities. Her merging of the fragments of the acquainted is, besides a confrontation of the alienation we are experiencing, also a call to look athwart at the recognized. Her sculptures invite the audience to “Look Awry” as worded by Zizek. Because alteration of the perspective in fact means re-clarification of our minds polluted for a long time.
